At the front of the room next to the podium stood a large cardboard donation bin. On the front, taped proudly, was Lily’s drawing of the blue coat blown up on the copier so everyone could see it.

Classes filed in, teachers guiding them to sit cross-legged on the floor. [music] The sound of shuffling sneakers and whispered conversations filled the gym.

Lily stood to the side with Mrs. Whitmore and Mr. Blake, her hands clasped, heart pounding.
