Mom turned as the bell over the door chimed and her face brightened—automatic—then faltered when she saw my expression.

“Oh,” she said softly. “Josh.”

Dad’s eyes scanned the shop like he was assessing the resale value.

“Hi,” he said, too formal.

I didn’t invite them deeper. I didn’t offer water. I didn’t ask how they were.

I just stood behind the counter, hands resting on the wood like an anchor.

Mom took her sunglasses off, revealing eyes that looked tired in a way mascara couldn’t fix.

“We need to talk,” she said.

Dad nodded. “This has gone far enough.”

I held my face still. “You’re right,” I said. “It went far enough three years ago in your kitchen.”

Mom’s mouth trembled. “We didn’t know—”

I cut in, calm. “You did know. You just didn’t want to explain.”

Dad’s jaw tightened. “Josh, you embarrassed us.”

I blinked once. “You embarrassed you.”

“That sculpture,” Mom whispered, like the word hurt her tongue. “Why would you do that to family?”

I leaned forward a fraction. “Why would you ask your son to pretend he wasn’t your son?”

Silence landed between us.

Dad glanced toward the window, like he still cared who might be watching.

Mom’s voice got smaller. “We were trying to protect you,” she said.

I almost laughed, but it would’ve sounded cruel. “From what?” I asked. “Your friends’ expectations?”

Dad exhaled sharply. “You don’t understand how things work in our circles.”

I nodded, slow. “I understand exactly how things work. That’s why I left.”

Mom stepped closer. “We want to move forward,” she said. “We want you back in our lives.”

“Then say it,” I said.

She blinked. “Say what?”

“Say you have a son,” I replied. “Say it out loud, without asterisk. Without ‘complicated.’ Without ‘situation.’ Say it in the same room as the people you’re trying to impress.”

Mom’s throat bobbed. Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s not fair,” Dad said.

I nodded again. “Exactly.”

A hinge line can be quiet.

I wasn’t yelling.

I wasn’t shaking.

I was done negotiating my existence.

Dad’s voice cooled. “This is blackmail.”

“It’s a boundary,” I said.

Mom’s eyes filled. “Josh, please. We love you.”

“Then love me in daylight,” I said. “Not in private. Not in whispers. In daylight.”

Dad opened his mouth like he was going to argue.

Mason, in the back of the shop, turned a saw off with a sharp click. The sound made Dad flinch.

I wasn’t alone anymore.

Mom’s voice softened. “Can we at least… can we start with dinner?” she asked. “Just us.”

I looked at her for a long moment. Not the version of her in my head. The real one standing in my shop, surrounded by wood and tools and the life she always dismissed.

“I’m not punishing you,” I said. “I’m protecting myself.”

Dad’s eyes hardened. “So that’s it?”

“That’s it,” I said.

Mom’s shoulders sagged. For a second, the mask slipped. She looked older. Human.

Then she straightened and put her sunglasses back on.

Because even now, she needed the costume.

Dad nodded once, like a deal had failed. “Fine,” he said. “We tried.”

Mom’s voice cracked. “Josh…”

I didn’t move.

They left.

The bell over the door chimed again.

And when it went quiet, I realized my hands were steady.

Mason walked up beside me. “You okay?”

I exhaled. “Yeah.”

He stared at the door for a moment. “They going to come back with more paper?”

“Probably,” I said.

Mason shrugged. “Paper burns.”

I smiled despite myself.

The week after that, I got on a plane to Seattle for the gallery show.

I hadn’t flown in years. Airports always made me feel like a kid again—people rushing, announcements echoing, the weird vulnerability of taking your shoes off in public.

In the terminal, I saw a guy in line with a little flag patch on his backpack, worn at the edges. It made me think of the faded magnet on my truck. Symbols can mean whatever you need them to.

Opening night, people circled my sculptures like they were trying to decode them. I listened to strangers say things I’d never heard in my parents’ house.

I thought about my parents, their friends, their expectations.

One night, months later, my mom left a voicemail that was different.

Just her voice, small and tired.
